April Amber Telek was born and raised on the North Shore
of Vancouver, British Columbia. She began working as a model
locally at ten years of age, before travelling to Tokyo,
Japan at the age of 13. During her four years in Japan,
she pursued her modelling career, winning the Shiseido Cosmetics
contract for Asia from 1989-1990. April represented Canada
under the title of Miss Canada 1994 in several International
pageants including Miss Top Model of the World (Istanbul,Turkey),
Miss Asia Pacific Quest,(Manilla, Phillippines), and Miss
Globe (St.Pettersburg).
Shortly after her return to Canada she began working as
a professional film and television actress. April has since
starred or guest-starred in over 40 film or television projects
including a regular role on "The Immortal" as
Dr. Sara Beckman and guest roles in "First Wave",
"Special Unit 2", "Outer Limits" and
two episodes of "Millennium", including the pilot
episode "Who Cares?". April was also the Supporting
Lead in "Freeway 2 - Confessions of a Trick Baby".
She is known by the Stargate Fans for her role as Sallis
in season 9 of Stargate SG-1.
Gilles Nuytens: You've
gone through numerous stages in the movie and TV shows sphere,
before you became an actress you worked as "P.A", "TAD"
and the "crafty assist" . But have you play on stage or
would you like to do it?
April Telek: I have been in a number of
plays on stage...some musicals as well!
Gilles Nuytens: You've
been a model before you became an actress, do you keep doing
it?
April Telek: No, I don't model anymore.
I didn't really care for it. I loved the travel aspect of
the modelling industry, but to be honest with you, found
that I didn't deal well with a business that was based solely
on what I looked like...I have too big of a mouth for that!!
LOL!
Gilles Nuytens: Play
in a movie, a television show or on stage is quite different,
which one do you prefer and why?
April Telek: I must say that the thrill
of being on a stage and truly "living in the moment" would
have to be my preference, but am not planning to give up
my career in film and TV anytime soon. I've been fortunate
enough to make a solid living in film for the past 10 years,
so I may actually take some time off to do a play in the
spring.
Gilles Nuytens: What
made you audition for the role on Stargate, a particular
reason or an ordinary audition among others?
April Telek: It was initially an ordinary
audition, however I grew to really want to book it, once
I found out the clever way the Harrid and Sallis would be
incorporated into the storyline.
Gilles Nuytens: Which
is THE ROLE of your life, the one you want to play at all
cost and even play voluntary?
April Telek: I have already, but absolultely
would love to play Marilyn Monroe again! She was such an
incredibly complex woman. While I was vying for the Miss
Canada title, I sang, danced and acted as Marilyn for the
talent portion of the competition, and upon winning the title,
I had the chance to perform as her in several countries
around the world. I was even hired by Bill Gates to sing
Happy Birthday "a la Marilyn" at a birthday party for a
Microsoft Architect!! Very fun!
Gilles Nuytens: Which
is the one you wouldn't play for the world?
April Telek: I wouldn't want to play any
kind of character that glamorized topics that are harmful
to children...there is so much garbage out there right now
as it is...it seems as if no topic is taboo anymore.
Gilles Nuytens: Which
is the role you preferred to play, the best one, the one
that most marked you?
April Telek: I really loved playing Dr.
Sara Beckman on the television series "The Immortal". I
loved getting the chance to put on great costumes and wigs
for under-cover operations, and playing characters from
the past like my own Grandmother, and Miss Kitty from the
Wild Wild West!
Gilles Nuytens: Do
you have an anecdote to tell us on the shooting of Stargate?
April Telek: I don't really, I just loved
the experience overall.
Gilles Nuytens: You
already knew Stargate, How do you see the changes during
the season 9? Is it really different as it used to be and
as we can hear? And what is different, the stories, the
atmosphere? Some people consider that is really negative
for the franchise, what can you say to relief them?
April Telek: I can't really offer you much
insight in this regard, as I had never been to the set before
my episodes. Sorry.
Gilles Nuytens: You
spend a lot of time with Paul McGillon when you where in
L.A. What kind of person is he? Have you seen him since
he plays Dr. Beckett on Stargate Atlantis? Have you a pleasant
anecdote to tell us about him?
April Telek: I adore Pauly! He is really
one of the good guys in this business, and deserves all
the success he has. He took me for a tour of the Atlantis
set while I was filming SG1...what an amazing set!
Gilles Nuytens: You
are born in April and your first name is April, it is not
a coincidence, I assume? By the way happy birthday ... with
1 month late!
April Telek: Thanks!
Gilles Nuytens: Thanks
very much for the time you give us. Could you say a little
word for your French speaking fans ?
April Telek: Oh, I wouldn't want to take
such a lovely language and ruin it with my terrible version
of French! I had a terrible teacher growing up, and I regret
never learning it better. I have in fact, promised myself
that when I have children, they will be enrolled in French
Immersion. It's a beautiful language!
